Danny Boyle has plans for a third “28…” zombie film.
Along with Edgar Wright’s Shaun Of The Dead (2004), Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002) lead the way with the resurgence of the Zombie genre during the early part of the century, and now Boyle has confirmed that the Brit director may be once again providing another shot in the arm for Zombie films after he revealed that he has plans for a third chapter in the “28 Zombie franchise”, which has been lifeless since the release of the second film, 28 Weeks Later (2007) which neither featured a script by Alex Garland nor Boyle in the director’s chair.
During a recent interview with The Independent, Boyle confirmed that he had an idea for the third movie but he’s also planning on re-teaming with original writer Alex Garland for the project, who has since emerged as a prominent director in his own right.
“Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part,” Boyle said. “It’s properly good.”
Although this sounds promising, it may be some time before we see the team up, with Garland’s workload being pretty heavy of late after critical success with 2014’s Ex Machina, followed by perhaps more mixed reviews for 2018’s Annihilation which was denied a theatrical release in many territories in favour of falling to Netflix.
Next up the writer/director is due to hit the small screen with writing and directing duties on all eight episodes of Devs, the upcoming sci-fi/thriller series for FX.
Boyle remained cautiously optimistic though,
“The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn’t reference any of that. It doesn’t feel stale at all. He’s concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it’s stood in abeyance really, but it’s a you-never-know.”
