David Hasselhoff wants Knight Rider back on the road.
It seems the Hoff just won’t give up on getting back behind the wheel of KITT as actor David Hasselhoff recently revealed that he and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn had talked about rebooting Knight Rider and he told the Hollywood reporter,
“He responded in a big way. If it does go forward, I don’t want it to be spoofed like Baywatch or 21 Jump Street. Those films lose what it’s about and you have to respect the fans.”
Well it now appears that the actor is pitching the idea to other directors as well and he has now told Cinemablend that he has approached Robert Rodriguez with his idea. The actor has compared his new vision for the show to the recent R-rated comic-book adaptation Logan in its tone.
Hasselhoff stated,
“I have met Robert Rodriguez. He does Dusk til Dawn and Machete. And I said ‘You need to do Knight Rider.’ Because he was doing a marathon of Knight Riders and he said ‘Can we have a selfie!?’ And I said, ‘No, I don’t want a selfie! I want to do the movie! I want to shoot the TV series! I want to bring it back and make it dark! Michael Knight comes back and he’s pissed.’ … I hope it happens, and if it does, it’ll be kind of like Logan. It will be dark. Hasselhoff as Michael Knight in 2017. Knight Rider. The saga continues.”
It appears from his most recent comment that he is open to Knight Rider being a film or a television series. Whilst Gunn would appear very busy with his commitments to Marvel, both directors have an obvious affinity for the show and The Hoff seems completely committed to getting KITT back on the road. Whether anyone else has the same enthusiasm to get KITT back on the road as Hasselhoff remains to be seen.
In contrast to Hasselhoff’s above comments, The Weinstein Company has revealed its plans to make a Knight Rider reboot in the same vein as 21 Jump Street with John Cena and Kevin Hart. Given Cena and Hart’s far more prominent standing in Hollywood at present, this particular reboot seems to have a far better chance of being green lit than Hasselhoff’s.
