James Gunn – Teenage Groot to appear in Avengers: Infinity War.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 proving a massive box office success and due for imminent release on DVD/Blu-Ray, Director James Gunn took some time to speak of one of the standout post credit scene of a now teenage Groot. Whilst we would defy anyone not to fall in love with Baby Groot it must be pointed out that he wouldn’t stand much of a chance battling Thanos in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War but Gunn has now revealed that the adolescent version of everyone’s favourite one line, green fingered space hero who we saw as a teenager in the post credits scene that takes place in the same timeframe as the beginning of the Infinity War. Speaking to Cinemablend the director confirmed,
“He’s exactly the same. That’s exactly the Groot we designed for ‘Infinity War.'”
So it would appear that we may see a tree both in a sulk and battling alongside the Hulk in the upcoming Marvel mash-up. It’s unknown how quickly Groot ages but it would appear to be a lot quicker than humans. Gunn went on to explain,
“It’s complicated. I think you have to stick through future movies to find out exactly what the story of Groot is. I get a lot of questions and the thing I say that bums people out more than anything else is that Baby Groot doesn’t have the memories of Adult Groot. But it’s complicated! His life is not like our lives… It’s his aging, and Groots, where they come from and how they do their thing. It’s pretty much worked out in my head, but we’ve only let out pieces of that.”
So it’s conceivable that we may need a few more sequels before we see that larger and older version of Groot seen in the original film.
