Jodie Whittaker talks about becoming the new Doctor Who.
Jodie Whittaker has finally broken her silence on getting the role of Doctor Who. Speaking to BBC 6 Music in what was her first broadcast interview since it was revealed that she’d be playing the first female version of the Time lord, Whitaker revealed that she had spoken to actors who had previously played the Doctor but didn’t name which ones. She explained,
“The overwhelming sense was this is such an exciting journey. It’s to be enjoyed. There’s no advice you can do – no person plays this part the same. What a freeing thing it is.”
When asked about some of the fan reaction, both negative and positive she explained,
“I’ve missed a lot of the fun stuff and probably the bad stuff because I’m not on any type of social media and never have been, so if I get something it’s a mate screen grabbing something and sending it to me. They obviously edit… actually, sometimes they don’t!” she added, joking that any negative posts sent on to her by friends left her confidence shaken.
The actress enthused that she had seen “an amazing video” of a young girl’s reaction as she watched the trailer revealing the Doctor’s new identity as a positive moment for her and the Broadchurch star admitted that in the past she would’ve thought that landing the role of the Doctor “was not in the realm of possibility.”
Whitaker said that when she found out she was successful after auditioning that she was “incredibly emotional”. The 35 year old joked. “I didn’t faint – I played it really cool and cried.”
