Magnum P.I. set to return in the form of two different TV shows.
Classic TV shows being rebooted is becoming quite the norm these days. Recently we brought you news of Vin Diesel producing a Miami Vice TV remake as well as Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn’s involvement in the new take on Starsky and Hutch.
According to Deadline we may be seeing Magnum PI return to our TV screens, however, this development has a strange twist with not one, but two shows currently in development with different broadcasters to boot.
For those too young to remember, Magnum P.I. was a popular detective show that ran from 1980-1988 and was Tom Selleck’s big acting break. Selleck starred as Thomas Magnum, a former Vietnam veteran turned private investigator who lived a luxurious life in Hawaii as the result of a wealthy benefactor who spent his days solving cases with the help of his old army buddies Theodore ‘T.C.’ Calvin, and Orville ‘Rick’ Wright, and both those supporting characters are said to be reappearing in the remake. Interestingly the role of Magnum’s old foil Jonathan Higgins will return but with a twist, as the character will now be ex-MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins.
Original lead Tom Selleck, who can be seen in the long-running cop show Blue Bloods, reportedly declined to be involved with the upcoming reboot but gave it his blessing. The project comes via CBS’s reboot wunderkind, Peter Lenkov who has already successfully updated other properties such as Hawaii Five-O and MacGyver.
This new version is set to feature Thomas Magnum as an ex-Navy SEAL who returns home from Afghanistan and uses his military experience to begin a private investigation business. What is strange is a Magnum P.I. sequel of sorts is already in the works at ABC, which will supposedly feature Magnum’s daughter Tommy Magnum and is said to be scheduled to air in 2018.
With two different versions of a Magnum reboot on their way, the race to grab the keys to that iconic, red Ferrari should be interesting to see.
Film ‘89 apologise for the excessive use of so many pictures of Tom Selleck as Magnum P.I. in such a relatively short news article but we just couldn’t resist as he’s easily one of the coolest guys we’ve ever seen and worthy of celebration.
