Marvel Studios reportedly want Disney to re-hire director James Gunn.
It appears that it’s not just the Guardians of the Galaxy cast that want director James Gunn reinstated for the third instalment of the Marvel film series, with Deadline reporting that Marvel Studios themselves are also aiming to get the writer/director of the previous two instalments back on board, with their sources saying that there are apparently back channel conversations taking place between Marvel Studios and Disney. It’s said the Marvel contingent is trying to persuade Disney to explore a compromise that might bring Gunn back into the fold for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, as something that would be in the best interests of the franchise.
Gunn’s (admittedly very poor taste) tweets were dug out after almost a decade and published by The Daily Caller, One America News Network correspondent Jack Posobiec and right wing commentator Mike Cernovich, apparently after Gunn mocked conservative pundit Ben Shapiro. Gunn immediately offered his apology for the old tweets but Disney was quick to axe him afterwards.
This current situation where Marvel are apparently backing his return follows an open letter signed by virtually all of the lead Guardians cast offering their support for his reinstatement. More recently Dave Bautista, who plays Drax The Destroyer has gone as far as publicly stating that he would ask for his release from his contractual obligations if Gunn’s script wasn’t used at the very least for the forthcoming third Guardians film.
