Production begins on Avatar 2.
Well, it seems it has finally happened. After years of speculation and confusion it was announced today that Special Effects company Weta have began production on the first of James Cameron’s 4 Avatar sequels. We’re still two and a half years away from the (current) release date of December 18th 2020 but it looks like something is finally happening.
There has been much talk over the last few years of Cameron’s adventures in screenwriting with the number of sequels seeming to grow each time he spoke about the project. Rumours of an underwater story line and 3D technology that would not require glasses have been making their way through the media for years but, until today, nothing solid has been confirmed.
Weta is the special effects company that was created by Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk to produce Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures and is perhaps best known for their work on The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies.
Avatar is the most successful movie of all time and has grossed $2.78 Billion worldwide so it’s understandable why the money men at Fox want more. However, the big question is does the public really want it? If it’s released on time (and, given everything that seems to have happened so far, that it is big “if”) it would still be eleven years between the two films.
How much the world has moved on and changed remains to be seen but if anyone can pull it off James Cameron can.
To think Cameron will film 5 sequels simultaneously that’ll cost more than $1 BILLION and will be hitting theaters in the next 8 years sounds insane but let’s see how this turns out.
