Stephen Daldry attached to direct new Obi-Wan Kenobi film.
There has been a trickle of Star Wars related news recently which is keeping all of us at Film ’89 bubbling with anticipation for the various forthcoming films in the saga. After yesterday’s teaser from Ron Howard on the set of the new Han Solo movie, today we have news that the next film in the Star Wars Universe will be based on Ben ‘Obi-Wan’ Kenobi. According to The Hollywood Reporter this film is in its very early stages but a director may already be attached.
Stephen Daldry, the man behind Oscar nominated films like The Hours, The Reader, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and Billy Elliot, is in negotiations to direct. Fans of the series will remember that Obi -Wan was charged with protecting young Luke Skywalker on the planet of Tatooine and we can assume that the story will take place in the years before the events of the original 1977 film.
If this is the case then the new film will almost certainly be grounded on Tatooine with limited opportunity to travel into space. This could give the filmmakers an opportunity to further explore the life and culture of this iconic planet as well as giving us further opportunity to gaze upon that glorious twin sunset.
The 2013 novel, Kenobi, written by John Jackson Miller also covered this timeframe although it’s doubtful that the new film will be based on this particular book. There have been many rumours recently as to who would be the focus of the third Star Wars Story film with both Yoda and Boba Fett being strong favourites. Looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer before we see Yoda as a youngling.
